Announced earlier this month, the initiative is part of Microsoft’s broader European Digital Commitments and builds on its long-standing Government Security Program. But this isn’t just another corporate pledge—it’s a tangible, proactive response to the growing cybersecurity threats facing Europe today.

So, what’s new?

Microsoft is offering free access to this program for all 27 EU member states, EU accession countries, EFTA members, the UK, Monaco, and the Vatican. That’s a powerful gesture of solidarity—and one that reflects the urgency of the moment. From state-sponsored cyberattacks to ransomware-as-a-service models, the threat landscape is evolving fast. And Europe’s public institutions, academic bodies, and critical infrastructure are increasingly in the crosshairs.

The European Security Program focuses on three key pillars:

1. AI-powered threat intelligence sharing – Microsoft will work directly with European governments to provide tailored insights into national threat landscapes, helping them respond faster and more effectively.
2. Increased cybersecurity investment – The program will enhance capacity-building efforts, ensuring that local teams have the necessary tools and training to stay ahead of emerging threats.
3. Expanded partnerships – Microsoft is deepening its collaboration with organisations like Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3), embedding investigators and streamlining intelligence sharing.
