My Insights from Directions 2024, by Valentina Boccardi

Attending Directions EMEA 2024 was an enlightening experience, particularly with a focus on Microsoft’s Copilot and its innovative features. Here, I share my key takeaways and insights from the event, exploring how these advancements can drive efficiency, foster innovation, and maintain a competitive edge in the industry.
One of the standout sessions was led by Dona Sarkar, Microsoft’s Chief Troublemaker for Copilot and AI Extensibility. The session reassured us that Copilot is not a disruptive force, but a practical and accessible assistant in our professional lives. It’s designed to enhance daily work by simplifying tasks and boosting productivity. This evolution mirrors past advancements like the transition from typewriters to computers and landlines to smartphones. As these tools become indispensable, next-generation AI like Copilot is set to simplify complex processes and allow us to focus on more strategic and creative tasks.
A significant highlight was the introduction of Copilot Studio, a new addition to the Power Platform family. This tool, with its transformative potential, allows users to create custom agents tailored to specific business needs. Copilot Studio offers a flexible solution to build agents that can automate various business processes, whether you are a novice using natural language or an advanced user employing code. This flexibility makes it accessible to different skill levels, opening up a world of possibilities for many businesses.
Migration from Dynamics NAV to Business Central (BC) was another key topic. With the enhanced functionality of Business Central, organisations can streamline operations, improve data accuracy, and leverage advanced analytics to make more informed decisions. These benefits encourage many companies to transition from Dynamics NAV to Business Central. Microsoft provides a migration tool that facilitates this process. The tool helps transfer data from Dynamics NAV to Business Central, preserving all critical business information. While customisations complicate the migration, the tool supports the conversion of custom objects and functionalities into extensions in Business Central. This structured approach helps in managing the transition smoothly. Additionally, migrating to Business Central online offers immediate benefits such as integration with other Microsoft services like Power BI and Power Automate, enhancing overall business efficiency and providing a strong motivation for the transition.
New EU and UK regulations require companies to track sustainability metrics like CO2 emissions. Business Central’s new sustainability module will help companies comply with these regulations by tracking sustainability data similarly to financial data. It is particularly useful for companies focused on recycling and environmental impact.
Directions 2024 showcased the practical applications of Copilot and its tools, emphasising the importance of adapting to new technologies. The event highlighted how integrating Microsoft’s solutions can significantly enhance business processes, streamline operations, and ensure compliance with evolving regulations. This proactive approach to technology adoption is not just about keeping up with trends; it’s about staying competitive and fostering innovations. Ultimately, Directions 2024 underscored that the future of business lies in the seamless integration of AI and other cutting-edge technologies into everyday operations.
