Excel Add-In for Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management: Queue-Tips

The Excel Add-In for Dynamics 365 (D365) Finance and Supply Chain Management came a long way since the fickle AX 2012 versions. Microsoft built the Excel Add-In feature to retrieve, update, and add data to D365 by utilizing the data entities.
Listed below are ways to enable and access the Excel Add-In:
Enable the Add-In within Excel
- You will need to manually enable the add-in if this is your first time using it.
- Path you can follow to enable the add-in: Insert -> My Add-ins -> Microsoft Dynamics Add-in -> Add
- You might be prompted to sign in using your D365 credentials when enabling it for the first time.

Access the Excel Add-In
- Look for the ‘Microsoft Office’ icon that can be found on the top right corner of almost all the forms, list pages and grids.
- When you are on some list pages and forms, upon clicking the Office icon you will see a drop-down with a choice to either “Open in Excel” or “Export to Excel”.
- “Open in Excel” creates a dynamic connection to the data entity in order to update, create, and refresh the data to and from the system. On the other hand, “Export to Excel” will simply launch the selected data in Excel.
- Now to access the Excel Add-In make sure to click on “Open in Excel” after selecting the data entity.
- After downloading the Excel workbook, click on ‘Enable Editing’ to enable the add-in (if this is your first time accessing the add-in refer to ‘Enabling the Add-In’).
Creating the Data
- You can add a record in the same excel sheet and publish the changes using the Excel Add-In.
- Extend the table (see below) enough to include the new records instead of adding a record below the last row (which might result in an error).

Updating the Data
- When updating the data through the add-in, all the CRUD (Create, Read, Update, and Delete) operations go through the standard D365 security framework. The operations are performed respecting the user’s security role and restrictions.
- Changes that have been made and published within Excel, will also be applied to the data within D365.
This is how the Excel Add-In can be enabled and accessed. Apart from creating and updating the data, you will also be able to filter the data, modify the design, create a calculated field, and do some dynamic reporting. Excel Add-In whilst allowing you to manipulate the data also serves as a strong reporting tool that can be connected directly to your Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management.
