Creating Social Value: Microsoft’s Impact in the UK

In an increasingly interconnected world, the concept of “social value” has taken on critical importance. But what does social value mean, and how is it realised? For Microsoft, it’s about creating positive societal impacts—contributing to social, economic, and environmental objectives through innovation and collaboration. This blog delves into Microsoft’s initiatives in the UK and their far-reaching impacts.
What Is Social Value?
Social value refers to the broader benefits an organisation delivers beyond its business operations. For Microsoft, this involves applying advanced technologies like cloud computing, generative AI, and data analytics to address pressing challenges, including:
- Environmental protection
- Expanding opportunities for underrepresented groups
- Combating cybercrime
- Preserving biodiversity
Queue Associates uses AI tools like Copilot in Dynamics 365 applications to enhance innovation and productivity. This creates social value by utilising Copilot’s skills to improve accessibility, customer experiences, sustainability, workplace inclusivity, and data-driven decision-making. These efforts benefit businesses and contribute to broader societal benefits.
Furthermore, Queue Associates has a significant global presence. With offices in key locations such as New York, London, Hong Kong, and Bermuda, Queue Associates delivers innovative solutions across six continents helping businesses worldwide enhance productivity and drive social value through advanced technology.
Empowering Careers with the Microsoft Connector
In partnership with GetMyFirstJob, Microsoft developed the Microsoft Connector to help individuals pursue careers in digital fields. This platform provides practical resources, connects users with local roles, apprenticeships, and training, and enables small businesses to post job openings. The initiative links diverse talent to meaningful opportunities by bridging social mobility barriers.
The estimated five-year total economic benefit for nearly 2,000 apprenticeship graduates is £86,000 per person, generating a combined economic impact of £170 million. With a Social Return on Investment (SROI) of £3.95 for every £1 spent, the platform is a resounding success.
TechHer: Bridging the Gender Gap
Since 2016, Microsoft’s TechHer programme has empowered women with digital and professional skills to advance their careers. This free initiative inspires participants to explore the transformative potential of technology, from cloud computing to generative AI and app development.
The projected five-year economic benefit for 1,500 women attending TechHer digital boot camps is £70,000 per person, with participants expected to earn 33% more than before the programme. Building on its success, TechHer has expanded to include 6,000 women in the Public Sector, with additional courses planned for 2025.
Innovate Together: Advancing Local Governance
Microsoft’s Innovate Together programme provides local councils a collaborative virtual space to address shared challenges. Approximately 1,600 people from 300 local authorities have joined, sharing innovative digital applications and best practises to enhance public services for citizens.
Microsoft’s Discount Program for Education and Charities
Microsoft offers a comprehensive discount program for educational institutions and nonprofit organizations. Eligible entities can access free technology grants and discounted solutions across various Microsoft products, including Azure, Dynamics 365, and Microsoft 365. These programs aim to empower educational and charitable organizations by providing them with the tools needed to achieve their missions, improve operational efficiency, and drive positive societal impact.
Measuring Impact and Driving Change
Microsoft’s commitment to social value is evident in the tangible outcomes of its initiatives. Microsoft drives meaningful change while fostering innovation by focusing on skill development, economic mobility, and environmental sustainability.
