Boosting Supply Chain Management to Cope with Today Disruptions
Supply chain disruptions are not new. Over many decades, we have seen incidents of cargo traffic disruptions caused by numerous “Acts of God” such as tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods.
We have also experienced port strikes, trucker strikes, waterway closures, and pirates at sea.

Piracy – Piracy, for example, poses an incredibly unique and severe threat to the global economy, as most international trade occurs via sea transport. The hot spots of modern piracy are the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, off the Somali coast, in the Strait of Malacca, the Danube River, and the Caribbean. The estimated annual loss due to piracy worldwide is $13 to $16 billion. When piracy incidents are reported, ship owners also experience insurance rate increases of as much as 30%. And the daily loss incurred can quickly run thousands of dollars. Perishables could be a total loss.
Waterway Blockage – And then there are recent incidents such as the Ever Given episode, a more than 200,000-ton container ship the size of the Empire State Building, stuck in the Suez Canal for six days, halting traffic in one of the world’s key waterways. More than 400 ships were stranded, and those that could be re-routed via South Africa took seven days longer to reach their destinations. Every day the Ever Given was stuck, it held up an estimated $9.6 billion of goods. Ships rerouted via South Africa to avoid the blockage took seven days longer to reach their destinations.
According to insurer Lloyd’s List, 90% of the Ever Given cargo was not insured for delays.
What would you do…
As a manufacturer, what would you do if you were expecting a shipment today of a given widget that is an integral part of your BOM (Bill of Materials), but it is delayed by six days or more? Would you have to shut down production? Lay off, workers? At what cost?
